In Semester 1, students will be studying Geography and Economics and Business.

In Geography, students will look at the influence of people on the characteristics of a place. For example the methods of First Nations people in managing the land and resources; the positive influences of people on their environment including reforestation and land-care groups. Students will explore how Australia manages and using its environments and the practices that aim to manage human impacts on the environment. They will explore the geographical diversity and location of places in the Asia region and Australia’s connections with other countries.

In Economics and Business, students will learn about the types of resources available in Australia including wheat, water and coal. They will distinguish between needs and wats and how resources can be used more sustainable to meet these needs in the future. They will also consider the influences on consumer choices and how to make informed consumer and financial choices. Students will explore the impact that influence including personal preferences, social trends, budgetary constraints, peer and cultural factors have on their spending choices.

In Semester 2, students will be studying Biological and Earth and Space Sciences.

In Biological Science, students will be looking at how the form and behaviour of living things enables survival. For example the physical characteristics that enable plants or animals being able to survive in habitats such as nocturnal creatures or those who can survive in desert environments. They will also explore and how changes in physical conditions affect living things. For example how changes in physical conditions as a result of human activity impact animals, such as urban lighting’s affect on nocturnal and migratory animals.

In Earth and Space Science, students will look at the processes that change the Earth’s surface, for example the impact of erosion and extreme weather events on the landscape. Students will also learn about the solar system and the movement of the Earth and other planets around our sun. They will explore the role of gravity in keeping the planets in orbit around the sun; appreciate the distances and relationships between the sun and other planets; and predict how the tilt of the Earth, pointing one hemisphere towards or away from the sun affects the amount of sunlight on the surface of the Earth.
